Lou Gehrig's Disease
What is Lou Gehrig's Disease?
This is a rare disease named Lou Gehrig's disease, more commonly referred to as ALS (or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) that most often occurs in persons over 50 years of age (rarely before age 40), with more men than women affected. It's a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that leads to weakening and wasting of the muscles. Depending upon which neurons are first affected, the disease will manifest differently among individuals, but eventually all four limbs become involved and there may be considerable cramping and stiffness that develops with the partial loss of nervous control over muscles (in humans).

Lou Gehrig's Disease Natural Health Healing TipsAn essential cofactor for the beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids, L-carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound required for the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix for use in energy metabolism. Its antioxidant properties include superoxide anion radical and hydrogen scavenging that reduces mitochondrial injury and apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. In transgenic mice carrying a human SOD1 gene, oral L-carnitine significantly delayed the onset of signs of disease, delayed deterioration of motor activity, and extended life span. Furthermore, subcutaneous injection prolonged survival even when treatment was initiated after the onset of symptoms. A small (42 treated/40 placebo) randomized double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study of acetyl-L-carnitine, showed an increase in median survival and slower ALSFRS-R and FVC decline in the patients taking L-carnitine 3g/day for treatment of Lou Gehrig's disease .
Co-enzyme Q10 (Gel Type)Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat soluble vitamin-like substance (gel type, best) found in mitochondria, that is part of the electron transport chain, participating in aerobic cellular respiration and the generation of ATP. Both pre-clinical and clinic studies have been completed assessing CoQ10 in ALS. Transgenic mice, fed daily CoQ10, demonstrated an increase in survival by 6 days compared to controls, which met modest statistical significance. Although high doses of up to 3000mg/day (see vitamins, etc.) were well tolerated in patients who had this same Lou Gehrig's disease .
Please remember that (in case one were using other prescription medications) it's always a good thing to first consult with a healthcare practitioner (or doctor) before starting any new treatment (either naturopathic or homeopathic doctor, best).
