What is Sleep Apnea?
This is a common, though serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep, known as sleep apnea (short video). Persons with untreated sleep apnea intermittently stop breathing continuously during their sleep, upwards to hundreds of times. This might indicate that the brain and rest of the body may not get enough oxygenization (or oxygen).
This chemical by-product of the protein building block L-tryptophan that is a serotonin precursor named 5-HTP has been recommended for persons suffering from this malady, as decreased serotonin levels might also be the cause this same sleep disorder. While serotonin production depends on magnesium, 5-HTP might increase the body’s production of this hormone. Magnesium is a mineral that is vital to muscle regulation. And because apnea is a problem with the muscles of the upper throat, ensuring you have enough magnesium in your diet is crucial for treatment of this ailment of sleep apnea.
High Dietary Fiber
Good sources of high dietary fiber for sleep apnea treatment might include fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, sprouted beans (or legumes), and whole grains. Try to have at least 25 to 30 grams each day.
Please remember that (in case one were using other prescription medications) it's always a good thing to first consult with a healthcare practitioner (or doctor) before starting any new treatment (either naturopathic or homeopathic doctor, best).
