Ulcerative Colitis Natural Health Healing TipsUse of probiotics, a goodly bacteria that are in the gut, have been found to be effective in treating ulcerative colitis. It's helpful to control the number of potentially harmful bacteria, reducing inflammation, and improve the protective mucus lining of gut.
Probiotics (see vitamins, etc.) are amongst the more popular remedies for inflammatory bowel disease because they are without significant side effects and appear to be safe for most persons. A University of Alberta study examined 34 people with mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis who were unresponsive to conventional treatment. Researchers gave them a probiotic supplement called VSL#3, at a dose rate of 3,600 billion bacteria a day for 6 weeks. At the end of the study, 53 percent demonstrated remission on a sigmoidoscopy and a further 24 percent had a favorable health improvement. BoswelliaBoswellia is a herb (organic, best) that comes from a tree native to India. The active ingredient is the resin from the tree bark, which has been found to block chemical reactions involved in inflammation. It is used by people who have either ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and/ or other inflammatory conditions. Unlike anti-inflammatory medication, boswellia doesn't seem to cause gut irritation that might happen with conventional pain reliever drugs.
Another noted ulcerative colitis study found that 82 percent of those who took a boswellia extract with a dosage rate of 350 milligrams, three times daily experienced remission. Some rare side effects of bowellia included nausea, diarrhea, and skin rash, etc.. Boswellia's available in pill form. It should say on label that it's standardized to contain 60 percent boswellic acids. It should not be taken for more than 8 to 12 weeks unless under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner (or doctor). Please remember that (in case one were using other prescription medications) it's always a good thing to first consult with a healthcare practitioner (or doctor) before starting any new treatment (either naturopathic or homeopathic doctor, best).
